DNA and PRA Testing Day

Clause 89 – Inherited Diseases

The new legislation provides for penalties for the breeders who “.intentionally or recklessly allow an animal with an inherited disease to breed”.

This code is made under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986. The code and its provisions are to be observed by owners, carers and custodians of animals used for breeding that are affected by heritable disease or that carry heritable genetic defects that could cause heritable disease in progeny caused by inappropriate selection and mating of animals with these defects.

PRA or Cone Rod 1 has now been tested for and found in the miniature smooth variety of the Dachshund. Geneticist’s have located the marker and are able to test for this heritable disease. We have known for a long time that PRA is a heritable dsisease in the miniature long variety of the Dachshund and responsible breeders have actively tested for this. Miniature smooth breeders now also have a responsibility to actively test for PRA in their breed.

In an effort to assist and support our members to test their breeding animals the Dachshund Club of Victoria has negotiated with Genetic Technologies a not to be repeated price for the test and profile of your animal.

So what is involved?

Your Dachshund will have a mouth swab taken form the inside of both cheeks if they are micro chipped the tester from Genetic Technologies will identify them by scanning and recording their micro chip number. If they are not chipped you can just bring along their pedigree for identification purposes and their registered number will be recorded against their swab. The results will be sent directly to the owner of the animal.
